family memories that last a lifetime
Extended family sessions are always some of my favorite sessions to photograph. Life moves quickly, kids grow up fast, and it’s not often that everyone can get together for photos. That’s what makes sessions like this one so special.
This beautiful extended family session took place last May at Fort Benjamin Harrison State Park in Lawrence, Indiana—one of my favorite locations for family photos in the Indianapolis area. The park offers gorgeous tree-lined paths, natural greenery, and soft evening light that creates a timeless backdrop for family portraits.
Spring is one of the best times of the year for family photos in Indiana. Everything is fresh and green, the temperatures are comfortable, and it’s a great opportunity to capture updated family photos before the heat and humidity of summer arrive.
One thing that made this extended family session stand out was how well everyone coordinated their outfits. Each family chose colors that complemented one another—soft blues, pinks, and neutral tones—which worked beautifully with the natural greens of the park. Coordinating colors rather than matching exactly helps photos look polished while still allowing each family’s personality to shine through.
During extended family sessions, I capture a variety of groupings including the entire family together, individual families, grandparents with grandchildren, and siblings. These combinations help tell the full story of the family and often become some of the most treasured photos.
Another benefit of extended family sessions is that multiple families can share the session investment. When families plan a session together, everyone can get updated professional photos while splitting the overall session cost.
Fort Harrison State Park is a wonderful location for extended family photos, offering plenty of beautiful spots for large family groups while still feeling relaxed and natural.
If you're looking for a family photographer in Greenfield, Indianapolis, or the surrounding Central Indiana area, I would love to help you plan a session that captures your family’s story.
